Eastern had four games on Saturday and won each one of them. The Hellfish were tearing it up all day long and had many up-wind points. When the day was all over the Hellfish did not have a team that was within two points of them. After a great day on Saturday the Hellfish woke with bad news that the tournament was canceled on Sunday.

The next tournament we attended was the Hope invite which happened the week before sectionals. The Hellfish took their pool by beating Calvin, GVSU, and Kuyper college. Then in the first round of the championship bracket the wind decided to go crazy. Hope won the flip and that ended up being the difference in the game. With no up-wind points between either team the Hellfish really only had themselves to blame for not capitalizing at all. The final score was 9-8. The last game of the day was against Western. Eastern was still disappointed from the loss against Hope and they let it affect them, they started this game down 5-1. When it was all said and done Eastern lost on the final point with a score of 12-11.

The last tournament of the year was sectionals. Eastern started the tournament against Michigan State. After starting the game with a lot of intensity and tying the game 3-3, State decided to go on a run and take half 7-3. Eastern decided this game wasn't that important to accomplish their goals so they let some of the new guys get some sectionals experience. The next game was against a very good Michigan-B team. Michigan-B ended up have a few up-wind breaks and Eastern could not get any. The final score was 13-8. Eastern ended up winning their next game against Central pretty smoothly 13-7. The last game of the day was against Calvin. Eastern opened the game up 4-1 but Calvin would battle back. When it was all said and done Calvin won 12-10. Eastern started Sunday morning playing K-zoo B in a game that was much needed for the Hellfish to move on for a chance to go to regionals. Eastern won this game 15-4. In the first game in the 4th place bracket the Hellfish were matched up against Western. In one of the most intense games I have ever played in the hellfish tried to battle back to late. After being down 10-5 the soft cap was blown. The Hellfish ended up rallying back but still lost with a final score of 12-10.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/TAk8CdfmznI/AAAAAAAAAG8/YZQ9clOPckw/s400/Sectionals+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478976434647518834" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/TAk8m7AU4kI/AAAAAAAAAHM/Z7fvhQCXnRU/s400/sectionals+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478977061044675138" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 367px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/TAk8UFxu7QI/AAAAAAAAAHE/JYe-oQ1HIGE/s400/sectionals+8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478976737518742786" />

It wasn't the end that we all had imagined, but I believe the future team will use this season as ammunition for the future years. Everyone on the team knows how good we can be if we play to our potential. This will be one of the main goals for this team for next year. I look forward to what the Hellfish have in store for the future. I strongly believe that next years team will be by far the best that Eastern has ever had. And with the program that has been set in place I feel that every year will be stronger than the previous year. I am proud to say I am and always will be a hellfish.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/TAk7qM9TNsI/AAAAAAAAAG0/WM2YRlBYICo/s400/sectionals+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478976017891800770" />

Thanks for all the memories and great times 2006-2010 Hellfish.

Your old captain and great friend

Derek Bezeau

EMU Home Tournament

Our home tournament couldn't have had better conditions. It was 39 degrees outside, raining, and the wind was about 20 miles and hour with gust of up to 30. It was truly a perfect day for ultimate.... PSYCH!!

Our day started off pretty scary as one of our guys had a seizure during warm-ups before our first game. This was the first time many of us had witnessed this and it was very unnerving. The ambulance would come and our friend would end up being completely fine after he went to the hospital and got checked out which all of us were very happy to hear.

After this scary beginning we still had a game to play against Oberlin College. Oberlin was equipped with a few good handlers who were able to work the disc with the wind and against it. EMU was never really able to recover and Oberlin capitalized on their chances they ended up winning the game with a final score of 12-9.

Our next game would be against Hope College. The game was tied at 8's when the hard cap blew. Hope was receiving the disk and they never gave Eastern a chance as they went right down the field for a score and the win.

The tournament would be cut short, so this next game would be our last. It would be against Michigan-B who we consider a pretty big Rival. Michigan-B is a team with a lot of intensity, but also a team who is well coached and knows how to play ultimate. The game was very sloppy because the winds had really picked up , and the fields were really getting beaten up by this time. U of M was up 8-7 when the hard cap was blown but it was in the middle of the point. The Hellfish were able to go down wind to score after a long, long point. Eastern had a great pull which Michigan-B immediately hucked to no one(they were planning on doing a huck and zone). Eastern picked up the disc in the corner of the endzone. The wind at this time was blowing at the sideline that eastern was on. So not only did the Hellfish have to go upwind for a tough point but they had to get it off the sideline in a trap zone. This is exactly what the Hellfish did though. There was a good break throw to a popper who immediately threw it to a handler, who found the other popper, who played give and go with the other popper and by this time the disc was 75 percent down the field. The Hellfish stayed calm and about 3 throws later threw the disc in the endzone for a score. Going up wind and off the sideline the Hellfish marched the disc up the field without a turn and a score. It was an absolutely brilliant point.

After a great battle against UofM-B the Hellfish finished the day with a 1-2 record.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KRmaokJDI/AAAAAAAAAGs/eY9mEOwb_GU/s400/home.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454582187869611058" />

Just a picture of Coley getting Low like no other.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KRl3JjXbI/AAAAAAAAAGk/6Ben7EVPP_I/s400/home+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454582178344295858" />

Harras doing what he does best, Skying other people.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KRlmyhBCI/AAAAAAAAAGc/bSD9DZTGD5U/s400/home+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454582173952705570" />

The team after a very muddy afternoon... still looking good!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KRlYSnO7I/AAAAAAAAAGU/80K9ZMMj1m8/s400/home+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454582170060798898" />

A point in the game when Jamie Pidcock has a huge smile... I however was not able to participate in this glorious event, but I will try to summarize some of the main things that happened on this awesome trip.

After 16 hours of driving through snow, drifts, rain, and mostly Ohio the Hellfish finally arrived at their destination in Charleston, SC for the first game just 15 minutes late(actually one van of 7 players showed up 45 minutes late). After a long day of driving, a lack of sleep and no time to warm-up the Hellfish were forced to get on the field for their first game. The Hellfish would have to do without three of their top handlers and two of their top defenders for this tournament because they all had to stay behind in Michigan for one reason or another. Even with horrible circumstances the Hellfish were able to put on a battle but eventually fell on Universe point against Furman College with a score of 9-10.

The rest of the day would be kind of similar. The team was still exhausted from the long trip and eventually lost their next three games to Charleston,Georgia College state, and Georgia Tech-B.

Day 2

This would be a new day and the Hellfish were ready to act like it too. With a positive attitude and not ready to quit the Hellfish would win the next two games pretty smoothly. It was said by some players that the team really shined these two games and had some moments of brilliance from new guys and veteran players. The scores were 15-11 against Charleston-B and 10-6 against Mary-Washington. The last game of the day would be for the winner of the losers bracket and the Hellfish would match against Clemson-B. The final score was 11-14 Clemson-B but from what I heard it was a close game from start to finish. The Hellfish finished the tournament with a 2-5 record but had a lot of great things to look forward too. Some of these things would be the coming out of a few rookie players. One who I heard filled in especially well in a handler role was James "King James" Rafko, who hardly handled much before this tournament. I also heard much buzz about Christian "tina" Doctor, and his Excellent defensive skills. Both of these guys would go on to win our tournament Rookie of the weekend award.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKnJ8AsbI/AAAAAAAAAGM/qKQueGI-BSg/s400/spring+break+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574503986246066" />

Finally the relaxing part of Spring Break would begin. The team had to drive 4 hours but it was well worth it when the arrived at their destination. The team had a house picked out that was just a couple of blocks away from the Atlantic Ocean. I heard that 55-65 degree weather was common at this point in Spring Break while it was still 30's-40's back in Michigan.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKfRnTdgI/AAAAAAAAAGE/AIlf3czWnxY/s400/spring+break+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574368607925762" />

The team participated in many group activities such as Catch Phrase, which sounded like it was played a lot. There was even a story about our very own Douglas See when it came to catch phrase. Before going on spring break Doug did not have a nickname, but now we all know him as Icepick because apparently he yelled icepick at a girl during catch phrase in a very loud, and inappropriate manner(there is obviously more to this story that I am no telling). But ya, now he is Icepick to us!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKfNnR1tI/AAAAAAAAAF8/hoTNQumc4x4/s400/spring+break+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574367534077650" />

This picture above me just shows how tired our team looked during day one of the tournament.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKetIGD2I/AAAAAAAAAF0/g1XEckRe1Pc/s400/Beach+practice.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574358813347682" />

Even on spring break these guys did not slack off. I believe they had a practice/conditioning work out almost everyday. And I believe many of the guys threw around a disc everyday regardless. This picture above just shows our team working hard on the beach.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKefF81tI/AAAAAAAAAFs/CMui588ekWg/s400/spring+break.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574355046258386" />

It was finally about time for the team to go, so before heading out they had to take one group shot to remember the 15 guys who participated in this awesome event

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/S7KKd8m1ylI/AAAAAAAAAFk/SpupQpiCa_E/s400/spring+break+sunset.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454574345788967506" />

Before leaving we had to take one shot of the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Hellfish!

The fall season is winding down and the Hellfish would be attending their last tournament in Bowling Green, OH. For this tournament the Hellfish would be bringing 19 people and be splitting up into offensive and defensive lines. The O line would include these people:

Brian Harras
Michael Dishaw
Chris "Zeke" Conlan
Jamie Pidcock
Dan Boynton
Christian Doctor
Bohdon Pelekh
Alex "Scuttle Theiss
Luke Maggard

The D line would include:

Derek Bezeau
Kristopher Coley
Michael Okeefe
Michael Gordon
Doug See
James Rafko
EJ Cochran
Gary Grant
Aaron Hunter
Steve "Ramen-Noodle" Robenault

Here is a Picture of all the guys at the tournament.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/SwLuNvAhvrI/AAAAAAAAAEU/RX05svlLijQ/s400/BG+tournament.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405144422522404530" />

We started off the tournament playing a team called Wayne. Wayne was composed of some of the top players from the Ann Arbor area. They used their knowledge and skills to take us down with a final score of 13-6.

Our next game was against Icarus. We took the first half against Icuras with a score of 7-1. We decided we would keep many of our new guys in the game to get them a lot of experience. Icarus worked their way back into this game and the score was 9-7. We decided to put our whole team back into the game and ended up winning 12-9.

Our last game of the day was against Michigan State-B. This was a much improved Michigan State-B team compared to the previous years. The Hellfish kept playing their game though and still beat Mich State-B with a final score of 15-11.

Our first game on Sunday was against Bowling Green, the host of the tournament. The Hellfish decided to throw clam's and zone D's against BG during this whole game. BG was just not able to cope to this type of defense. The Hellfish took this game with a final score of 15-0. It was the first shut-out I could remember in 4 years of playing for Eastern.

Our next game was against BG's Alumni team. The intensity for this game was through the roof because we definitely wanted a shot at making the finals. The Hellfish D was forcing many turnovers but were unable to convert on these turnovers. The Hellfish O was able to score about 70 percent of the time but it was not enough to keep up with BG's offense. The final score was not a good overall view how the Hellfish really played. But the game ended with the score being 15-7.

Our last game was against our rivals Michigan B. Michigan-B is one of the best if not the best B team around. They did so well last year that they qualified for Regionals. We all knew that this was going to be a tough game going into it. The game started with the teams trading points and being tied at 2 a piece. The Hellfish then scored and then forced a break and took the lead 4-2. The guys from Michigan-B would not be silenced as they fought back just as hard to break the Hellfish a couple of times. Michigan-B took half with a score of 8-7. Michigan-B received the disc after half and immediately marched down the field to make the score 9-7. It was about this time that the soft cap sounded off and it would be a game to 11. Once this happen Eastern scored three straight points to make the score 10-9. Michigan-B would march right down the field to tie up the game at 10's. It was universe point and Eastern was receiving. We did not want to give Michigan-B a chance so we wanted to make sure we valued the disc and did not turn it over. Eastern marched down half the field when someone on the team put up a cross field break that would be contested by one of Michigan-B's better players. The disc flew up into the air for anyone to grab and one of the Hellfish sprinted over to towards the disc and caught it a second before it hit the ground. At this point Eastern was only about 15 yards away from scoring. The disc was on the sideline, so it was immediately swung to the middle of field. Michael Dishaw was there to receive the disc and found Dan Boynton immediately in the end-zone and threw it to him. Dan had to make a jumping catch but was able to come down with the disc for a Hellfish victory. It was an amazing match by both teams and also it was the beginning to many more throughout the rest of the season.

The Hellfish ended the tournament in 3rd place out of 9 teams. But it ended the tournament in first place out of all college eligible teams. A 4-2 record throughout the tournament was enough to make all Hellfish proud of their work.

Also the Hellfish have a tradition of rewarding their two best rookies at each tournament. And this tournament the honors went to Doug See for his outstanding defense and Christian Doctor for his amazing cuts, and his rapid improvement for the knowledge of the game.

Now the fall season is over but we all look forward to what we could potentially achieve in the winter season. Great Job 09 Hellish, and best of luck to the 2010 Hellfish, I have a lot of confidence in you.

Derek "Beez" Bezeau

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emuhellfish.blogspot.com/2009/11/who-are-we-hellfish.html' title='Who are we?? For the first time ever Eastern Michigan split up their team into two with an X/Y split. With only half the people and talent scattered between the two teams we had no clue what to expect. But after each team won their first game with scores of 13-3 and 13-4 both teams had a lot of confidence that they could compete no matter what.

In pool play Eastern Michigan one went 2-1 with two very commanding wins and one very close loss. In the other pool Eastern Michigan two went 3-0 with easy wins for every single game.

Now it was time for bracket play and Eastern Michigan one would barely miss the championship bracket but Eastern two made the cut. Eastern Michigan two won the very first game very easily and finally faced their first big challenge in the semi-finals against Calvin College. Calvin played a zone that Eastern was not able to adjust to and basically shut down our offense.

When it was all said and done Eastern 2 got 3rd place and Eastern 1 guy 12th place, both out of 24 teams. Everyone in attendance was very happy with what we saw. We feel much more confident now, knowing that when we put our teams together that we can become a huge force to deal with.

Happy Halloween!

Hellfish vs gOLDfish = Alumni Showcase game

We had our first annual Hellfish vs Alumni game yesterday. It was a great time for everyone in attendance. We invited many of our family and friends to come spectate this event so they would be able to see what the game of ultimate is really about. When it was all said and done we had probably about 80 total people in attendance for this match. It was very exciting to actually have fans for an ultimate game.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/SuX7IJF04xI/AAAAAAAAADs/jcrj6JuqQpo/s320/alumni+game+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396995845771289362" /> <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/SuX7RXTBtDI/AAAAAAAAAD0/jDWdpgnlTSI/s320/alumni+game+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396996004203574322" />

For about 2 weeks before the big match a lot of chatter and trash talk was being shared between the hellfish and the alumni. Some of the alumni were saying the hellfish would be lucky to score 8 points on them in a game to 15, but we were saying they should be ready for the heat that we would be bringing.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 333px; height: 134px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/SuX8qbJb4FI/AAAAAAAAAD8/uUw8xAiVrUY/s400/alumni+game+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396997534245445714" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/SuX9v9VbDYI/AAAAAAAAAEE/e5dYI-tPQhg/s400/alumni+game+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396998728833502594" />

The stage was set and everyone was ready. The hellfish started the game of with an immediate break and were up 1-0 against the Alumini. Everyone on the team was jacked to get that early point, it kind of took the pressure off of our shoulders. The hellfish kept the pressure on for the next few points and brought the score up to 4-2. The alumni decided it was time to regroup and they took a time-out to figure out how to bring the game back in their favor. The time-out was great for them because they immediately had 3 straight breaks to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Alumni. The Alumni kept the pressure on into half and managed to be up 8-5.

The momentum was completely in the Alumni's favor and the hellfish just couldn't figure out how to get back into the game. The Alumni managed to get 2 straight breaks after half to bring the score to 10-5. At this point the Hellfish decided it was time for a much needed time-out. After the time-out the hellfish brought the momentum back in their favor by getting a couple great D's and quick scores. At this point the score of the game was 11-9. The Alumni was too skilled, and knowledgeable to let this momentum swing last for long. They rallied up 2 straight points to make it 13-9. At this point in the match the Hellfish had two hucks to receivers in the end zone that they both dropped. The Alumni wouldn't give us another chance to score on this point as they drove down the field to make the score 14-9. The match ended with both teams trading points to make the final score 15-10 in favor of the Alumni.

This was a hard fought battle by both teams but in the end the winner was the team with more knowledge and skill. The hellfish were very happy with their performance because in our minds this would honestly be one of the toughest teams we would see all season. We definitely felt that if we can compete with our Alumni that we would be able to compete with many of the teams that we face this year.

Derek "Beez" Bezeau

Absolutely None. No Wisconsequences

The Hellfish participated in their 3rd tournament of the year. This was the roster that we took:
Derek Bezeau
Chris Conlan
Dishaw
Mokeefe
Coley
Harras
Evan
Alex Heidtke
John Gow
Luke
Steve
Bob
Alex T
Christian
Doug
Steve. We knew we had a lot of work to do if we wanted to compete with the teams at this tournament. By the end of the tournament we went 0-6. We lost 2 matches on universe points and 2 matches by within 3 points(UPA score reporter has messed up on a lot of our scores this season, which means other teams are lying about our matches!). So Even though our record did not look great, we were pretty happy with how we finished. We were able to take 11 brand new players to Wisconsin and show them what ultimate was all about.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://emuhellfish.blogspot.com/2009/10/absolutely-none-no-wisconsequences.html' title='Absolutely None. This time the tournament would be "Michigan Open Sectionals." For this tournament the Hellfish brought these people:

Derek Bezeau
Spencer Young
Bob(N)
Steve S(n)
Jason K(n)
Logan B
Luke(n)
Alex T(n)
Mokeefe
Gordon
Jamie
Phil Nichols(N)
Coley
Harras
Christian(Saturday)(n)
Simon(Saturday) (N)
Alex Heidtke(Saturday)
Jason G(Saturday Only)

We brought 10 veteran players and 8 new players to this tournament. On a side note we still had 5 veterans and 10 new guys on our roster who were not available for this tournament.

The tournament started on Saturday with the Hellfish playing against a very respectable Hope ultimate team. We started the match with a lot of sloppy play, dropped disc, and bad decisions. Hope took advantage of our mistakes and scored on many of our miscues. At half time the score was 7-2 in favor of Hope. We had to explain to the new guys and veterans that the game should be much closer if it wasn't for all of our dumb mistakes and unforced errors. We took the field in the 2nd half with more confidence in ourselves. After some hard defense and smarter play we were only down by two with a score of 8-10. We traded points for the rest of the game and ended up losing 10-13. But this just means that we won the 2nd half 8-5. I was very happy with how everyone stayed composed and fought back to make it a close game.

Our next game was against the number 1 seed Corkjuice(East). Corkjuice was a much more experienced and talented team than us but we did not let this stop us from competing. When the game was all said and done be put up 7 on Corkjuice and we were happy with that.

Our next game was against Senior Discount. Every player on Senior Discount probably had more experience than our whole team combined, because of this reason we could not take them too lightly. We knew going into the game that we would have more athleticism, and speed over them so we used these things to our advantage. We were constantly fronting them and forcing them to try to beat us over the top, which they had trouble doing much of the time. After a decently close first half(7-4) the Hellfish went wild in the 2nd half and ended up winning 13-5.

The last game on Saturday was against a fairly young and inexperienced Aquinas College. We went into this game with a lack of intensity and Aquinas exposed this with a lot of hustle. We ended up taking half 7-5 but we were still upset with the lack of heart on the field. The 2nd half began with much more intensity by every player. Certain guys on the team began to layout for anything close, which is awesome to see. The game ended with the Hellfish winning 13-8.

After the tournament on Saturday the whole team went to TGI Fridays to indulge in some delicious $5 Jack Burgers/Chicken Sandwiches. A couple of the guys decided they would save their money by going to Wendy's where they still spent about $5 for a lower quality meal. Good job saving your money guys!

Everyone then went their separate ways to clean up and rest for a couple of hours. But the night was not even close to being over for 10 different hellfish. A friend of the team who lives in Kalamazoo offered his apartment for us to hang out and party at for the night. After about 15 rounds of flip cup, 2 disc races, a beer chugging race, and a game of thunderstruck the whole team was starting to feel pretty good. It was about this point in the night that a dance party seemed like a good idea. Everyone in attendance sang a long and danced to a variety of songs for the next hour or so. After a little while, we all eventually decided at about 1 am that it was time to go to bed.

Sunday began bad when we found out one of our players phone was not working, and we had no clue where he was at. We figured he would find a way to get a hold of us, so we left for the game fields. We arrived on the tournament site at exactly 9 AM, which is exactly when our game was supposed to begin. Luckily our opponents were having worse problems than us finding their teammates and they did not arrive till about 9:15 am.

At about 9:30 our game against a very experienced Steel Head team began. This team was composed of many older guys who have been around the game for a very long time, and still had a lot of athleticism. We started the game great by breaking them twice. But eventually they found their legs and started fighting back. At half we were down with a score of 8-4. When the 2nd half began, we really had no intensity or legs, and they were playing a very respectable game. We ended up losing with a final score of 15-7

Our next and last game was against a very big Calvin ultimate team. The average height of Calvin was most likely 6'2. But we had one very big advantage over them, and that was our speed. At about this moment our lost player showed up to the game field at the perfect time. The arrival of this player ignited a spark to our whole team. We started the game using a horizontal stack. We flowed amazing with short passes, and give and goes all the way up the field. We started the game with three straight points. At this time both sidelines were completely electric. This was by far our most intense game of the weekend.

At halftime we were up with a score of 7-5. The 2nd half was no different than the first. There was an abundance of layout D's, huge skies, and long huck's from both teams. Eventually Calvin tied the game up at 10's a piece. Calvin started zoning our team, and a lot of our new guys, and some experienced guys were just not ready, and could not adjust. When it was all said and done Calvin had wone the game by a score of 15-12.

To sum up this weekend, the Hellfish finished with a record of 2-4. To the outside eye this does not seem impressive at all, but to our team this was a nice accomplishment. We took 8 new guys to their very first tournament, and had 4 returners who had not played any competitive ultimate this summer and still competed with almost every single team. This tournament was another big step in the right direction to achieving our goals for the end of the season.

Derek "Beez" Bezeau

Practice and Team hang out time

The team has officially been together for 3 weeks now. Each time we practice we become better and better. It is amazing to see the rapid improvement from new players and even older players. Today we had our first inter-team live scrimmage. I was unsure of how this would work out at first. But everyone played absolutely stellar. There were no patterns of continuous turnovers; there were no signs of lazy players; and there were no signs of complete lack of knowledge out of anyone. The game finished with a final score of 15-12. The dark team was down by as much as 7 at one point but fought back hard to finish the game only down by 3. There were a lot of good things to take away from this practice, but we all know we still have A LOT to work on to accomplish our goals.

After practice 8 different players had to go home for various reason but 19 players were able to go out to eat at one of our sponsors, Tower Inn. We all had a great time hanging out with each other. Some of my personal favorite parts were when the waiter brought out Saganaki (twice) and the whole table yelled OPA loud as we could directly after words, when I burned my thumb on the Saganaki(which is flaming cheese) directly after the waiter put it on the table, when we all sung Alex Theiss happy birthday, and when Brian and I were tapping our glasses to be stupid and everyone stopped to listen to what we had to say(sorry for crying wolf Alex Heidtke).

Overall it was a great day, that left the feeling that there would be a lot of good things to look forward to for the rest of the season

Here is the whole gang that went to Tower Inn:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_awFYZiQC22A/Srr2V-HTo5I/AAAAAAAAADc/5K2nGxQ1R7c/s320/Tower+Inn+Group+shot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384887161786180498" />

Derek "Beez" Bezeau

Chicago Heavyweights

After just one practice the hellfish were ready to take their game to a bigger stage. The stage would be the tournament "Chicago Heavyweights" which had 40 open teams from all around the country. Although the hellfish were seeded 40th out of 40 teams we had high hopes that we could do much better than that. The team we brought was a cast of 15 different players. Out of the 15 players, 3 were new to the team(1 of which was brand new to ultimate), 11 were eligible players, and 4 were ineligible alumni. Here is the cast of players we brought to this tournament:
Michael Volkman
Goerge Lucero
Simon Vazquez
Jason Ganiatas
Logan Braun
Aaron Fredendall
Derek Bezeau
Chris Conlan
Brian Harras
Alex Heidtke
Mark Bordua
Kris Coley
Michael O'Keefe
Michael Gordon
and help from Dave Fumo

Our first game was against Test Tickle Me Elmo. TTME seemed to be a pretty athletic team with a lot of knowledge of the game. The whole game was a close battle with each teams trading points back and forth. When it was all said and done the Hellfish had lost the match 13-11. Our next match was against the X-MN out of Minnesota. This game seemed to be a tougher match up than the previous game. While the score may show we got stomped,(13-3) we actually had many opportunities to score where we just did not capitalize on. Our next game was against Rebel Madness who was based out of Minnesota as well. We were able to flow pretty nicely and force a lot of D's in this game. The final score ended up being 13-7 in favor of the Hellfish. The last game we played was against DingWop who were based out of Minnesota as well as the others. This was a game that we let slip out of our hands due to stupid mistakes and unforced turnovers. The Final Score of this game was 13-9.

After the tournament, everyone on the team went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch Michigan beat Notre Dame in the final seconds of the 4th quarter. There was high-fiving all around the tables and everyone was pumped, except Mokeefe (but nobody really cared). After dinner time everyone want back to the Hotel Room to get cleaned up. For the next few hours everyone just sat around and hung out. But about 11:40 at night someone decided they wanted to go to Wendy's, which was right around the corner. The whole team decided they were up for a late night trip, so we all barged in to Wendy's at 11:55 when they were supposed to close at 12, needless to say, some of us may have received spit in our food. Finally after all the late night fun the team decided to go to bed and get ready for the morning.

Sunday morning came with the sound of an alarm clock going off an hour pre-mature(Thanks Simon). Finally after hearing about 10 different phone alarms go off in the next hour the team decided to wake up. The team was supposed to be on a schedule, which we were already running behind on, but the continental breakfast was too much to pass up. After eating waffles, fruit, cereal and yogurt for about 30 minutes to long the team decided it was ready to leave. We showed up to the fields at 3 minutes before game time, which gave us more time in the parking lot to mess around(Who actually shows up to a game on time anyways??). We finally got to our field at exactly the same time our opponents were getting there(I guess they go by the same motto we do). The team we would be playing was Disco Tech, which is actually a team that is in our college sectional. Disco Tech definitely had a lot of new players and were not very experienced. We were able to play our game once we got warmed up and rolled on to a 15-3 victory. The last game of the tournament we would play was against Joyce which was based out of Columbus, OH. Joyce was a pretty athletic team but they were definitely not out of our league. The first half was pretty equal with each team trading points. By the second half of the game the hellfish lost their focus, intensity and legs and ended up losing 15-11.

For the first tournament of the year, the team was very happy to finish with 2 wins and 4 losses. Out of the 4 losses, 3 of them could have been victories which we thought was a good sign for the future. At the end of the weekend the captains picked our two MVP's for the tournament(MVP's are obviously not captains, or alumni). The captains decided the MVP's would be Michael Gordon, and Kris Coley. Each of these players showed a lot of heart, skill, athleticism and determination which is exactly what we were looking for from our players.

Now we are excited for the future and the chance to play against other college teams for the rest of the season.

Derek " Beez" Bezeau

The beginning to fame is here

At last the college season has begun. A new season means anything can happen. The slate is clean and for now our team is completely undefeated against opposing college teams. The end of last season left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth, and we all have been working hard this off season to become the best team we can be.

The season started off with a meeting composed of all our returning players and one new player. During this meeting we primarily discussed what we wanted to accomplish for this season. Every person had a chance to say their individual and team goals. Individual goals ranged from getting better throws,to becoming more athletic, to being a better defender, and everything else in between. But everyone's team goals were very similar. I can sum up everyone's team goals in two sentences. This years team wants to be able to compete in every tournament and wants to have a shot of winning every tournament. This years team also wants to be able to move on to regionals. These two goals will be stuck in everyone's mind throughout the whole season. Everyone knows what they have to do to make these goals possible, but I strongly believe that everyone is willing to put in all the work to succeed.

A couple days after the meeting the first practice was finally upon us. If this was already not great enough enough, it was also a supposed to be a perfect forecast. On this day it was sunny, 75 degrees, and very little wind. The scene was set for an ultimate day. I was hoping to see around 30 players for this practice. But the closer to the start of practice the more surprised I was with how many players kept showing up. Once practice started we had almost 40 interested players who seemed pumped at the opportunity to play some ultimate. After the team threw around and stretched we did a couple of drills to expose athleticism and determination in new players. And let me tell you that we found a large amount of these things from this years class of recruitment. We saw new guys run 4.5 forty yard dashes, we saw new guys jumping and skying people in the air, and we saw new guys lock down opponents on defense. I would definitely say in my four years of playing in this program that this is potentially the most athletic class I have seen yet.

Derek " Beez " Bezeau

Fall 2009 Tryout/Practice Information

Anyone who is looking for general information about the Hellfish or may be interested in trying out/practicing contact Derek Bezeau at:
dbezeau@emich.edu

Eastern Michigan 2008-2009

Sectionals Results: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=18&id=5874

Thanks to Mrs.Bezeau for filming and photographing us all season long at select tournaments.
